A question that many non-electricians and new learners will ask is – just what is inside a consumer unit and how are all the individual parts connected together?

To many, it is just a jumble of wires that snake in and out and behind different switches and devices.

Does any of it really make sense? How on earth can all this work? But it does.

What devices control the others and which devices work independently in the event of a fault.

And most importantly, how does a consumer unit protect me and my customers from electric shocks and fires.

This video will look at twin RCD split load boards.

Later videos will shed light on all RCBO boards and why; and on split boards that also include RCBOs, what is the advantage of that? Plus many others.

The type of consumer unit installed matters for function and safety. Getting it right is paramount.
