Every electrical accessory, switches, RCDs, circuit breakers etc. will have been designed to perform certain functions, according to a common standard of manufacture, the British Standards and/or the European Norming Standards.
It is up to us as electricians to know what functions each device is intended to perform and to select the most appropriate device to do this safely.
